Transitioning from Active Military Duty to the Classroom


Understanding and Supporting the Emotional Health of Student Veterans- With the passage of the Post-9/11 GI Bill in 2008, which provided increased education benefits for military personnel, and the official end to the war in Iraq, more veterans than ever are entering colleges and universities. Specifically, the number of veterans receiving Post-9/11 GI Bill benefits has gone from 34,393 in 2009 to 555,329 in 2011. Many of these student veterans are transitioning from combat to college after deployments in Iraq or Afghanistan. Student veterans bring with them a unique set of skills and experiences that make them a valued addition to our higher education institutions. However, the adjustment to campus life poses a variety of challenges to student veterans. There are things that you and your institution can do to support that transition.
Describe military culture and the adjustment issues related to the transition from the military to the classroom.
Recognize ways to make the health and counseling centers and their programs more veteran-friendly.
Identify some of the mental health issues that may be experienced by some student veterans and recognize how the signs and symptoms may manifest in individuals.
List resources for referral and additional training information.
